John Lennonのクリスマスソングといえばこの "Happy Christmas/Xmas (War Is Over)"です。 クリスマス・ソングの定番になっています。 John Lennonが、"White Christmas"を超えるようなクリスマス･ソングを作ろうとして製作。アメリカと日本で1971年に発売されたものの大ヒットにはならず、版権の関係で発売が延期されたイギリスで1972年に発売されてベスト4まで上がりました。 イギリスではJohnが亡くなった時にも発売され大ヒット！ この曲は "Imagine"と同じく反戦平和のメッセージが込められた名曲。 戦争の最中に「戦争は終わった」と歌うのはとてもユニークで大胆で印象的でした。 John とYokoはこの歌に先駆けて平和活動の一環として世界の多くの都市の目立つところにWAR IS OVERという文字を広告として大きく掲示し、戦争反対をアピールしていました。
今もウクライナで、中東で、戦火が繰り広げられています。 クリスマスにはみんなで歌って全人類が争わない平和な世界を願いたいものです。
