プロテストソングの象徴とも言えるフォーク･シンガー、Phil Ochs/フィル・オクスがケンタッキーの炭鉱労働者の現状を見て、彼らのような貧しい人々にとってはにとってのクリスマスとは何なのかを考えさせる歌。
1962年から1963年にかけてケンタッキー州 Hazard周辺で起きた炭鉱労働者のストライキと、それに伴う貧困や労働条件の悪化がテーマになっている。 この曲は、1960年代初頭のアメリカ・アパラチア地域の炭鉱産業における組合活動と経済的苦境を反映したもので、Ochs自身が1962年のクリスマス時期に現地を訪れ、ストライキ参加者と交流した経験に基づいています。
最後の部分ではキリストの誕生日にもかかわらず、キリストはクリスマスに浮かれることなく、貧しい民衆とクリスマスを共に過ごしているだろうと、後のジャクソン・ブラウンの"Rebel Jesus"に引き継がれる主張をして曲を締めている。
ケンタッキーの炭鉱労働者は全米の貧困層の代表だと見ることができる。
曲自体は1960年代半ばに録音されたが当時は公式音源や楽譜は発表されず、1986年のアルバム A Toast to Those Who Are
Gone でようやく正式にリリースされた。
