Bob Dylan のエレキギター路線に端を発したフォーク･ロック・ブームの初期、1965年8月に全米ナンバーワンヒットを記録した反戦ソング。

作詞者のP. F. Sloanはこの他にも政治的メッセージを込めたヒット曲を当時のフォーク歌手に提供しています。この曲は元 New Christy Minstrels (大人数編成のフォークバンド）の一員であったBarry McGuire/バリー・マクガイアにより歌われ、なんとビルボードチャート１位を飾った大ヒット曲です。　彼のソロ・デビューアルバムにはこの曲のほかに Bob Dylan の "Masters of War"＜戦争の親玉＞も収録されています。

RC サクセションの忌野清志郎により比較的原詩に忠実な訳詩で、1990年リリースの「カバーズ」というアルバムで発表されました。（このアルバムについては Love Me Tender のページをご参照ください)
