We Almost Lost Detroit／もうすぐデトロイトを失うところだった

原子力発電が最も発展しているアメリカで世界初の原発事故が1979年にスリーマイル島で起こったことは有名だが、この大事故が起こるまでに、日本と同じく、報道されていない事故が起こっていたのだ。1966年10月5日にデトロイト州の郊外にあったエンリコ・フェルミ１号という高速増殖炉の試験炉が炉心溶融を起こし、閉鎖された。これが世界初の炉心溶融として知られている。

スリーマイル事故の2年前の1977年に「黒いディラン」との異名をとっていたギル・スコット・ヘロン/Gil Scott-Heronがこのエンリコ・フェルミ1号炉の事故を歌った"We Almost Lost Detroit"をアルバム"BRIDGE"の中の一曲として発表。曲中にはオクラホマ州の核燃料製造プラント内部での不正を告発して、自身も放射能汚染が明らかになり、謎の死を遂げた労働組合活動家、カレン・シルクウッド／Karen Silkwood の名前も登場する。

スリーマイル事故後のアメリカでの反核運動の高まりのきっかけとなった、ジョン・ホール/John HallのPOWERも歌われたNO NUKES コンサートでもギル本人が歌い、絶賛を浴びた。
