1986年に発表されたこのライヴス・イン・ザ・バランス/Lives in the Balanceは政治的なスタンスを明確にした記念すべき同名アルバムのタイトル曲。in the balanceとはようやくバランスを取って立っていてどちらに転ぶか分からない予断を許さない状況を表す。LPレコードのジャケットの絵は自由の女神が監獄に閉じ込められている衝撃的な絵で飾られた。
常に世界のどこかでアメリカが戦争を起しているのにアメリカ政府はどうにか正当化して国民を戦争に煽り立て、軍需産業の儲けに貢献しようとする、このような現状を歌にした。21世紀は冷戦から対テロ戦争に移ったが、根本は変わっていない。
